Discover our story

Is knowing all the answers really that smart? Since our inception, we’ve been committed to asking the right questions and we remain steadfast in that today. Explore some of the moments that have shaped our history and purpose—to help clients thrive in an evolving world.

1937

The firm launches

Thomas Rowe Price, Jr., sets out to create an organisation “with a reputation for the highest character and the soundest investment philosophy.” Instead of charging clients commissions for investments, we charged fees based on assets—an approach that ensured the clients’ interests came first.

1950

An early growth stock leader

We start one of the first US growth stock funds, stemming from our founder’s early emphasis on finding companies with strong, long-term earnings potential. The firm prepares to start serving institutional clients.

1960

Small-cap pioneer

Pre-dating the Russell 2000 Index, T. Rowe Price packages its small-cap investing prowess for clients. The firm focuses on small, rapidly growing companies, supported by quantitative analysis.

1985

Emerging markets

We begin investing in emerging markets, more than 15 years before the launch of the MSCI Emerging Markets Index. Five years later, we launch our first dedicated emerging markets strategy in 1990.

2017

Innovative data tools empower investment professionals

Our Technology Development Center (TDC) in New York City opens, attracting world-class talent with expertise in big data, machine learning and predictive analytics, dedicated to bringing data-driven insights to our investment professionals.

2020

Continued growth

The firm establishes T. Rowe Price Investment Management, Inc. Total assets under management surpass $1 trillion.

Now and the future

We’re looking ahead, anticipating the evolving needs of clients, while always aiming to deliver consistently strong performance to help them achieve their long-term goals.

Put our rigorous curiosity to work for you

T. Rowe Price equity and fixed income strategies delivered higher average annualised returns than their benchmarks over time. And they showed better results in the vast majority of rolling monthly periods over a 20-year span.

Put simply, our strategies delivered more return, more often. That's the T. Rowe Price difference.

Our strategies outperformed their benchmarks 80% of the time

Ten-year periods, rolling monthly, over the last 20 years ended 31/12/23.

Past performance is not an indicator of future performance.
Analysis by T. Rowe Price. Represents a comparison of all marketable institutional equity and fixed income composites compared to the official composite primary benchmark assigned to each. Excludes money market, asset allocation and index/passive composites. In order to avoid double-counting in the analysis, specialized composites viewed as substantially similar to strategies already included (e.g. constrained strategies, ex-single country excluded strategies, etc.) are also excluded. Composite net returns are calculated using the highest applicable separate account fee schedule for institutional clients. All figures in USD. The performance of each T. Rowe Price composite was compared against its official composite primary benchmark using 10-year rolling monthly periods from 1/1/04 to 31/12/23.

Analysis aggregates and averages the performance history of 52 equity composites covering 5,525 periods (33 US equity composites covering 3,809 periods and 19 international equity composites covering 1,716 periods) and 28 fixed income composites covering 2,555 periods.
