T. Rowe Price has always been headquartered in downtown Baltimore, Maryland. First, at 10 Light Street, then at One Charles Center, and, since 1975, at 100 East Pratt Street. What began in the 1930s as a small, five-person firm handling accounts for local clients swiftly grew to a bustling 300 people serving clients across the United States.
Today, T. Rowe Price is a global company with more than 7,500 employees and clients all over the world who rely on our steadfast principles and disciplined investment approach.
The history of T. Rowe Price’s Baltimore headquarters is a three-part act that closely parallels the innovation and progress of Baltimore and the larger trajectory of American history. From a pre-Depression era art deco masterpiece to a sleek modern office tower in an ambitious new commercial center to its current concrete and glass harbor-facing home, T. Rowe Price has stayed local, pragmatic, and forward-thinking in its choice of headquarters.
Our founding building was a pre-Depression era art deco masterpiece. At more than 500 feet, it was the tallest building in Maryland when finished in 1929. Its ornate decoration and monumental size has made it a mainstay city landmark for nearly a century.
The first modernist-style skyscraper in Baltimore was built by world-famous midcentury architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It’s also a historically significant building that represents a revitalization of downtown Baltimore in the 1960s.
Thanks to then cutting-edge technology built into it by IBM, after which the building was named, 100 East Pratt Street was the first energy-conscious building in Baltimore. Designed by a famous modernist architect, it was made to look like an IBM punch card and was one of the first new buildings of the redevelopment of the Inner Harbor in the 1970s.
In 1979, T. Rowe Price launched its international joint venture with Robert Fleming. The venture, Rowe Price-Fleming International (RPFI), brought together the trusted management and capabilities of T. Rowe Price in the United States and Fleming globally outside the United States. This enterprise brought new investment professionals and research offices into the T. Rowe Price fold, in locations including London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Buenos Aires, and Paris. In the same period, T. Rowe Price also began to open new investment centers and corporate campuses across the United States.
In 2000, T. Rowe Price became a global company upon taking full ownership of the RPFI joint venture and rebranding as T. Rowe Price International, greatly expanding its number of investment professionals and research capabilities over time. Operating on the ground with local associates allows T. Rowe Price to uncover unique opportunities to better serve our clients’ needs to help them achieve their financial goals.
Coinciding with the company’s 85th anniversary, T. Rowe Price broke ground for its new global headquarters at Harbor Point in Baltimore. Buildings are scheduled to open in 2024.
Since the beginning, the firm has been forward-thinking and intentional about staying local. The new buildings are not only a renewed commitment to the deep and long-standing connection to the City of Baltimore, but also a commitment to supporting the surrounding environment. The new buildings will feature a water-harvesting system that will save approximately 1.55 million gallons of potable water annually, contributing to its proposed goal of LEED Platinum status for commercial interiors.
